Definitions of common graphic design elements:
DPI- Dots Per Inch. DPI is used to describe the resolution number of dots per inch in a digital print and the printing resolution of a hard copy print dot gain; the increase in the size of the halftone dots during printing. This is caused by the spreading of ink on the surface of the media. Up to a point, printers with higher DPI produce clearer and more detailed output. Sign Age uses the highest and most durable DPI which rages from 720 to 1440. When creating a file on your computer, create a full size image at 100 DPI, 50% file size at 200 DPI or a quarter size at 300 DPI. Ask us if you need help. A .JPG file- is a file typically used for internet use. A .jpg is a compressed and simple color format file and should not be used when printing a digital image unless its size is reduced by at least 2/3rds.
A .pdf file- is another compressed image file. there are differences with this format. Large images can have a high quality color profile attached to the file. This will help make your print more vibrant and color correct. Our print servers can decompress a .pdf and print most images with sharpness and clarity. However, there does exist the possibility that a small resolution or a bad quality file is converted to a .pdf so contact us with your .pdf and we'll tell you exactly what condition your file is in.
